Small Engine Repair & Women
Tonight I had an adventure. Well it actually started earlier in the week. I met at a Q&A one of the actors from “Walking Dead,” Jon Bernthal who is co-starring in a play in town. I went and saw the play “Small Engine Repair” at the Rogue Machine Theatre. It is the story of three guys who grew up together reuniting for a night of drinking. It turns into a psychological thriller where one choice sends four people down a tragic road. To me the message is clear- do not use women, or your actions may come back to bite you. There was male nudity, but it only made the point all that more clear. Just as in “Equus,” the need to understand the vulnerability and the seriousness of the events almost requires the level of exposure. The violation of action is a direct reflection of the violation inflicted on the most important character of the play who is in one way always on the stage, and yet was not cast and is not there. I cannot say more without revealing the ending.
I actually almost did not go. I looked over what the show was about and it smelled of “Lone Star” and guy toilet humor. There is some of that, but at a level that we women can get. Plus in a way there is a woman present and women are the catalyst for the entire action. Show runs Friday to Monday at 8 pm until June 5, or later. See Goldstar for tickets.
