Tonight on the bus there was an African American man passed out asleep in the very back corner of the bus.  An African American couple came in and sat next to them.  Something in the way they looked at the sleeping man and words exchanged told me they were going to rob him.  The couple were both drunk.  The man started to reach in the sleeping man’s pocket.  Well I being the heroic idiot say” Don’t steal that man’s phone.”
Ok well I just didn’t sit there.  As soon as I said those words I got up to move to the front to tell the bus driver.  The thief was slow to react being drunk.  He turns to his female companion and says” Did she say something to me.  Who are you to talk to me.”  I’m the idiot who says my fathers a former narcotics cop back off.
I walk not run quickly to the bus driver at the front. I tell him a man in the back is picking another man’s pocket whose asleep. The thief follows.  He continues to say” Who are you to talk to me.” Other people hold him back.  I hold my ground though scared and say I’m a lawyer.  Other people hold him back from getting close to me as he says” I don’t care about that.” The bus driver tells him” go back there are cameras everywhere and they see you on tape.”  The theif goes back but he looks up to the front and repeats several times” why you staring at me.”
The bus driver tells me There is another bus right behind, I could get off and take that one but we are almost at my stop.  I’m terrified though this guy will get off when I do.  I move close to the door to shield myself from being seen well by the thief.  When the bus gets to my stop I wait, let everyone get off then just as the bus driver shuts the door I say “Wait let me off and shut the door behind me” The bus driver gets what I want and opens the door long enough for me to hop out and quickly closes it and drives off leaving the thief and his friend staring at me as they drive by.
An Hispanic man who got off before me asked what happened.  I told him.  His response was he avoids those kinds of people.  I told him I always need to do the right thing.  Hero complex.  Though tonight it could have gotten me killed.
