“Loveless”
by Laura Ann Tull
An accountant office of paper pushers and numbers. A young man Mark nervous and dull but with life in his eyes is at his desk. His life is monotonous and mindless. His life is routine, too routine. He is a façade. He secretly yearns for something more.
At night this accountant dreams of the world. In this world love is not allowed and does not exist. Children are made by government choice. Hope consists of a set pay check every week with the opportunity of a raise once a year. Couples are chosen to mate for convenience and genetics and financial stability. All has to be government approved. Life is planned. Love is not allowed.
This is a love story with a twist. In this world it is cold. One is not allowed to feel or love or want or hope. Any song of strong emotions is seen as a flaw and that person is sent to be medicated and institutionalized. This life is a substanceless meal with no taste.
Mark has fallen in love with a woman he met by accident. Mechanic failure in an elevator brought them together. He now secretly thinks of her. He wants to talk to her again. This world people are isolated. This woman is someone not genetically matched to Mark.
The mystery woman is Felix. She is cat like. She works as a secretary but in the leadership pool. She has been targeted to be a trophy toy for one of the political leaders of this world, Clark King. She did not know there were men like Mark. She cant stop thinking of him either.
This is the story of how they carry on an illicit affair that is eventually discovered by Clark. Clark has Felix institutionalized and lets Felix think he is over her and was using her.
